Dog rescued after days without food trapped between walls

A dog has somehow managed to survive after being trapped between two walls for five days without access to food or water in Victoria.

Coco, an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, became stuck between two garages on the Mornington Peninsula after being spooked by illegal fireworks let off two days after New Year’s Eve.

Family and friends said their searched everywhere for the missing pup but she was hidden between the walls and became too weak to call out.

The dog’s owner, Lara Fullford, said Coco managed to survive because the gap between the walls was dark and kept her cool.

“It was like 40 degrees the day before [yesterday] and she still got through,” Ms Fullford said.

“I don't think she would have lasted another night for sure.”

But Coco was eventually found and her owners then rang local rural firefighters, the Dromana CFA and a vet for help.

“[The vet] actually had a bucket of lubricant which we put on top of the dog and between the walls, and Chris was able to pull her out,” Dromana CFA’s Justin Hellyer said.

The dog is currently on morphine and antibiotics but is expected to make a full recovery.

Veterinarian Kristin Wolfe said it is amazing Coco is currently able to stand given the injuries to her back legs.

However, her owners aren’t completely satisfied. They plan to do a letterbox drop to warn residents not to let off fireworks without notice.

“Fireworks are not something I think anybody likes the idea of around animals,” Ms Fullford said.

“It's quite traumatic what she's been through.”
